‘Run Barbados’ for 2004
Web Posted - Thu Jun 10 2004
“We wish to make it clear that we had not entered any agreement with Mr. Brooks with respect to the 2004 Run Barbados, and his decision to resign was premature in our view, since discussions were still at the early negotiation stage,” said Averil Byer, BTA’s Director Corporate Communications.
She has told stakeholders that, “the Run Barbados event will continue to live up to the standards we have established over the past 22 years. The race events, therefore, will be held December 3 to 5, 2004 as planned, and will be organised by the BTA, the Amateur Athletics Association (AAA) and other key partners.”
Word of the Race Directors’ resignation was published on the Internet in an announcement which attributed the action to the inability of the BTA, “the main supporter of Run Barbados to commit sufficient funding for this year’s event by the March 1 deadline.”
However, the BTA has explained that the arrangement to provide financial assistance to Brooks and Runners Choice Promotions International was initiated in the year 2000 for a period of three years with a diminished amount each year and the understanding that at the end of third year the BTA would have no more financial obligation.
Steve Edwards, the authority’s Manager Sport Tourism, said that the BTA, nevertheless, agreed to contribute to the organisation and marketing of the event for one more year (2003) when Mr. Brooks claimed that financial support was still needed and wanted us to return to the 2000 levels. “Without any subsequent discussion we learned of his resignation via an e-mail of the announcement on a web site,” he noted.
Edwards also allayed any fears about Run Barbados 2004 stating that arrangements for recruiting elite international athletes were well advanced with discussions being held with a number of athlete representatives overseas.
He added, “Arrangements are also already in place with a number of partners in the marketplace aimed at securing strong numbers for Run Barbados in 2004. These include the Leukemia Research Fund and Marvel Travel in Canada, Running and Sporting Tours in Britain and Atlas Travel being co-opted to take on the role in the United States.
Director Corporate Communica-tions Byer added that the BTA was committed to Run Barbados and would continue to bring interested and enthusiastic partners and sponsors together in order to maximise the potential of this key event.
The worldwide marketing and promotional efforts associated with Run Barbados
in 2004 will be launched by July 1st and will be centered on a new and
dynamic website www.runbarbados.org.
