It’s that time of the year again. The 2004 Under-15 school boys cricket competition will bowl off on Monday with teams cherishing hopes of dethroning defending champions Lodge School.

News of the start of the 2004 season came during a press conference held at the Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) headquarters at Kensington Oval yesterday.

Once again, Cable & Wireless will be the sponsors of the much anticipated tournament, as they continue to foster the development of the island’s youngsters in sports.

Vice President of Marketing with Cable & Wireless (Barbados) Limited, David Smith said that there will be some new innovations to this year’s programme which the sponsors have decided to add.

“To demonstrate the benefit of the tournament to the development of the game, we will be publishing nine articles during the season to recognise the illustrious careers of these graduands from the Under-15 level,” said Smith.

“In addition, at the end of the tournament, we will also be hosting a one week cricket camp for the top performers of the season. This camp will give the young cricket stars an opportunity to develop their game as they receive coaching tips from past and present cricket stars.”

“Furthermore, these young cricketers will also receive motivational speeches, team building exercises and media training, all geared towards the player’s individual growth for their future in Barbados cricket or even West Indies cricket.”

It was also revealed that plans are in the works for provision to include a ‘friendly’ match between an ‘Under-15 All Stars’ which will comprised of immediate past players against ‘the Tops’, made up of this season’s top players. The young cricketers can revel in the fact that the Cable & Wireless player of the week recipient will be interviewed on television by captain of the Barbados cricket team Courtney Browne and this interview will be carried during the CBC evening news’ Sports World segment.

Third Vice President of the BCA, Jeff Broomes and Business Manager of the BCA, Rollins Howard thanked Cable & Wireless for once again supporting local cricket at the Under-15 level.

Following are the respective zones and team allocation for the 2004 Cable &Wireless Under-15 cricket tournament – Zone A: Alma Parris, Combermere, Deighton Griffith, Garrison, Harrison College, Coleridge & Parry, Lester Vaughn Zone B: Alleyne, Grantley Adams Memorial, Lodge, Louis Lynch, St. James Secondary, St. Michael Secondary, St. Lucy Secondary Zone C: Alexandra, Ellerslie, Foundation, Parkinson Memorial, Princess Margaret, Queen’s College, St. George Secondary, St. Leonard’s Boys.
