BARBADOS men’s volleyball team got off to a fine start to their title defence when they defeated Bahamas in straight sets on the first day of the 10th Caribbean Volleyball championships at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Sunday.

Barbados’ women’s team set the trend for the host country on the opening day, as they smoothly combined their efforts to dispatch Guadeloupe 25-19, 25-15, 25-21.

Shari Matthews led the attack for the Bajan women with 16 kills. On the defensive end it was Angelina Smith with 16 digs and Sharon Bovell with ten digs.

In the men’s game Barbados with a starting line up that included Jamaal Nedd, Fabian Cox, Jason Griffith, Elwyn Oxley, Renier Grace, Sylvester Ward (libero) and Dale Addison (setter) won the contest in just under an hour 25-22, 25-15, 25-22.

Leading the charge for Barbados was the captain Oxley who finished with ten kills, two blocks and four digs. He was well supported by Grace who finished with eight kills, three blocks and one dig.

In the first set Barbados got off to a flying start to rush ahead 16-9. But the Bahamas teamed rallied to close the gap before the end of the set. The visitors closed the gap to within two points 24-22 but committed a service error to hand Barbados the set.

Bahamas strongly started the second set winning the first two points. But the hometeam recovered and beginning to get a grip on the game managed to forge ahead to lead 8-5. After the technical timeout the Barbados team went on a six-point run with Nedd serving and a front court that included Oxley, Grace and Griffith. However the run was ended when Nedd served into the net.

However, Barbados quickly carried the score to 20-8 and was on the verge of running away with the second set, despite some last minute efforts by the Bahamas team to claw their way to double figures with a small run, Barbados closed out the set 25-15. The third set saw more power hitting from both teams but it was the Barbados team which held a slim lead in the early stages 15-13. A substitute was made with Gregory Burke replacing Nedd.

A number of errors help Bahamas to swipe the lead from Barbados 15-16.

However Barbados regained their composure to recapture the lead 18-16 in a game of fluctuating fortunes. The determined Bahamas team won the next three points to regain the lead in the dying moments of the game 18-19 and carried the score to 19-21.

Seemingly on the verge of winning the set to stay alive in the game Bahamas stumbled and could only look on as Barbados locked the score thanks to a dink by Grace.

The Bajans won the next two points 23-21 before the Bahamas bench called a timeout. However a miscommunication after the time gave Barbados the victory, 25-22.

In the two women’s games played earlier in the day Jamaica defeated Trinidad and Tobago in three sets 25-20, 26-24, 25-16, while Martinique overcame Bahamas after five sets 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-13, 15-7.
