One
of Antigua's most famous sailors, Lord Horatio Nelson, left Antigua a
treasure that has recently been renovated and revitalised, Nelson's Dockyard
at English Harbour. Now a vibrant area with shopping and restaurants as
well as docking facilities, this is only one of Antigua's welcoming harbours.
In
April 2004 Antigua hosted its 37th Annual Sailing Week, an event that
draws sailors and fine craft from all over. A week of highly competitive
sailing is matched by a week of non stop partying for those that are there
to spectate! For further details
The
Jolly Harbour Yacht Club, on the sheltered west coast, is an extremely
active club, with members meeting every Saturday at 1.00pm for an afternoon
of racing. They also have an annual regatta every October and there is
a weekend Antigua to Barbuda cruising race in July that promises to be
lots of fun!
In December Antigua hosts the Annual Nicholson's Boat Show & Marine Fair.
This is probably the world's oldest charter yacht show when boats from
all over the world converge on English Harbour, Falmouth and the St. James'
Club. The amazing variety of sailing vessels includes cutters, sloops,
schooners and cats as well as big power craft.
