Ballet Inganzo - 'Air Studios

On July 22nd, 2002 Ballet Inganzo spent a day in Studio 1 of world famous 'Air Studios'. The session was made possible by the staff and engineers at Air recording the music of Inganzo without charge, and the result was twelve tracks of music, including the drum choirs, traditional tribal war crys and a number of songs.

Ballet Inganzo Ingoma- An extract of music by the drum choir representing a 'call to arms' for warriors

Inidukikije M'Ingenzo- A celebration of the outstanding natural beauty of Rwanda

Inshongore- This song was written by Alfred Sibomana, and is about all that Ballet Inganzo have come through and achieved in past years.

Mama Ndare- A traditional folk song, intended to be sung to a bride on the morning of her wedding

These three clips are taken from a performance by Ballet Inganzo at the National Theatre Outside stage on London's South Bank, July 2002

Clip 1 - Intore
Intore is a centuries old tribal dance. The participants represent warriors fresh from battle, declaiming their conquests and celebrating their victory. Intore is performed in full traditional costume, with grass wigs and spears.

Clip 2 - Ingoma
Ingoma is the music of drum choirs. The hand-crafted drums are unique to the region. Their combined sound is breathtaking in it's power and complexity and has proved one of the most popular facets of Ballet Inganzo to western audiences

Clip 3 - Inyamanza
Instrumental music, song and dance are indivisible in the music of central africa. This clip features all three, focusing on the distinctive Rwandan dancing style. The words of Inyamanza celebrate the wildlife of Ruhengeri.
