BARBADOS - sailing - Banks/Cruising Club Offshore Regatta 2005

Date August 13, 2005 Compliments of the Nation News

THE BANKS CHALLENGE TROPHY is now in the firm grasp of Gus Reader. He sailed into first place in the Handicap Class of the recently held Banks/Cruising Club Offshore Regatta with his boat Laser II.

Jason Corbin sailing Lightning had to settle for second while Warcloud, captained by Jacque Gloumeau, placed third.

More than 75 sailors competed in the regatta, which hosted five classes. The Optimist Class, which was opened to children ages seven to 15, got the day's events off to a splendid start. Oliver Walker won that event with James Bodden and Shane Defreitas following behind in second and third place. In the Racing Class, in winner's row was Bruggadung II, sailed by Paul Johnson, and cruising right behind was Rampajam with Clint Brooks at the helm.

The Multihull Class featured four boats. Sailing home smoothly in first place was Tyco, manned by Ronnie Williams, while Nature I, under the capable hands of Russell Corrie, cruised in at second place. The Echo Class, which was a two-man boat event,

had five entrants but due to technical problems only three finished. Their sailors were Lily Dash, Gary Mendes and Nicolas Dash in first, second and third respectively.

The Cruising Club Activities Coordinator Cyril Lecrenay said Banks was very gracious in sponsoring the event adding that it was even better than last year's. "The storm which passed the previous week made the sea great for sailing. We had a great turnout and I encourage those enthusiasts to come out and participate next year in what promises to be a bigger and better event," he said.

Lecrenay said he hoped to extend the event to a weekend, incorporating more activities and games, while creating more entertainment for participants.

Recognising the trend towards an earlier advent of the hurricane season, he added that there were plans to move next year's regatta a month or two ahead of the usual schedule. However, the exact date will depend heavily on the sailing calendar.
