Compliments of the 03/04/06

THE BARBADOS TURF CLUB (BTC) has been congratulated on the 25th anniversary of the Gold Cup.

The 25th running of the prestigious race takes place at the Garrison Savannah on March 4, and Eric Mapp, resident manager of Sandy Lane Hotel, sponsors of the Gold Cup, at a Press conference on Tuesday praised the BTC on reaching such an important milestone.

Pointing out that this would be the tenth year the Gold Cup was being sponsored by Sandy Lane, Mapp encouraged all of Barbados to come out and be part of the spectacle on Gold Cup day.

tribute to late champion trainer Bill Marshall. He added that this year's pre-Gold Cup parade would be enhanced by the paying of a special tribute to late champion trainer Bill Marshall.

Chris Armond, BTC secretary and racing operations manager, in confirming the parade would be paying tribute to Marshall, also disclosed that American Hall Of Fame jockey Gary Stevens would be in the country for the big day.
He said there would be a cocktail reception in honour of Stevens at Sandy Lane Country Golf Club on March 2 to raise funds for a local charity.

He encouraged race horse owners and trainers to purchase tickets for the charity reception

During the Press conference, the stall positions for the three main races on Gold Cup day were drawn.

These races are the Sandy Lane Gold Cup, with prize money totalling $200 000 and a first prize of $114 000; the Sandy Lane Spa Sprint Stakes and Trophy with prize money of $35 000 of which the winner will get $20 000; and the Tanglewood Stakes and Trophy with prize money totalling $70 000 and a first prize of $40 000.

Francis Cozier, BTC vice-president, in thanking Sandy Lane for sponsoring the Gold Cup and the entire day's card on March 4, hoped the sponsorship would continue for another 25 years.

He thanked the owners and trainers for their continued support of horse racing, along with the media for coverage which contributed significantly to the success of the sport.
Cozier was also pleased with the extremely good turn out of owners and trainers at the Press conference.
