THE BANKS INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY FESTIVAl, which last Saturday completed its 22nd edition, showed signs of recapturing former glories with the week producing satisfyingly high-quality standards of play on the field and a diverse social calendar off of it.

Hockey has stolen the spotlight in August 2007, and Dominion, the major showpiece, the men's title at the annual Banks Hockey Festival.

Dominion's fourth title in five years was probably their most satisfying. It was earned with flawless progress through the pool stages and capped with a thrilling 3-2 win over the quality Grasshappers side from the Netherlands in the men's final at the AstroTurf of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. Social events are critical to the proper conduct of hockeyt festivals. Accordingly please be guided by the social activities planned during the festival. Be warned that games start at 9:00 am in the morning. The after effects of the case of Banks that you drank the night before will not deemed an acceptable excuse for being late. Also trying to keep pace with the ‘’Roosters” could be detrimental to your health.

That's the report card assessment from chef de mission Craig Archer on Barbados' performance at the 20th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games held jointly in Colombia and Santo Domingo.

Barbados captured a record 19 medals, way above the eight they collected at both the 1998 Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and the 2002 meet in El Salvador.

The Banks Hockey Festival always lives up to its reputation as one of the best of its type in the world. Hosted annually at the Wildey Astroturf this years Festival promises to be as competitive as the ones before.


Barbadian Hockey is in a health state it has greatly improved since the Wildey Astroturf was laid some four years ago.
