The hills were alive with the sound of music. And
not even the dark clouds could dampen the spirits of hundreds of people
who flocked to Farley Hill National Park for the first day of Jazz
On The Hill. A cool-looking Arturo Tappin saxed his way into
the hearts of all, giving the crowd its money's worth. However, international
artiste Stanley Clarke and his band were certainly "bad to the
bone". Here, Clarke, who worked magic with his fingers on the
bass guitar, had the crowd screaming and shouting for more. His band
was certainly a crowd-pleaser, as many stood in awe watching each
musician give a little of his own speciality. Compliments of the Nation

in attendance and they enjoyed every bit of it.
Being disabled did not stop Anna Beckles from bringing
down the house. Judged in the professional category, Beckles did justice
to Whitney Houstons I Have Nothing in a truly moving performance, which
had the audience hanging on to every word. <

Music is an integral part of the social
life of Barbados. Whether it is dancing to the new crop of calypsos
released for the Crop Over carnival, enjoying back in time parties,
weekly reggae or monthly jazz, there is always a musical event to
attend.

also make appearances on the stages of the Caribbean.
Entertainment in Barbados is always assured of an
appreciative audience. There are regular reggae, soca, dub, house
and alternative venues on the music scene, as well as a full calendar
of jazz events. Classical and cultural performances delight audiences
and there are several annual theatre productions.

cultural extravaganzas reflect the dynamism of local music, theatre,

as one to the sounds of traditional music.
The big story of 2005 was Rihanna's
success on the international market, following her signing to Def
Jam Records, with Pon De Replay. While she did not get nominated
for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, she is young and talented,
and once she keeps it up she may secure a nomination for one of
the bigger awards in the future.
On home ground Rihanna took the lion's share of
the awards being eight times a winner at the
Barbados Music Awards held at Sherbourne Centre.
The origins of the Barbados Crop Over festival can
be traced back to the 1780's, when Barbados was the one of the world's
foremost producers of sugar. When the Barbados sugar industry declined,
the Crop Over festival suffered and in the 1940's stopped completely.
In 1974 the festival was revived and now draws visitors from all over
the world.
The Congaline
Music Festival, now discontinued, used a three dimensional approach
to the development of Barbados' entertainment industry. Four days
of music and partying were accompanied by a Trade Fair, exposing
the potential of the industry, and the Congaline Symposium which
brought together leading practitioners in the world of entertainment.
Nicholas Brancker is to be congratulated for presenting
a musical treat that mesmerized the appreciative audience at the
Plantation Garden Theatre. Solos by each of the musicians left no-one

include the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, historic Sunbury
Plantation House and the popular open air venue, Farley Hill National
Park. The jazz festival brings together top International talent
with the best of the Caribbean for an exciting week-long musical
