Shopping in St Peter

peightstown is enjoying a renaissance with the town becoming a favourite for good restaurants

Speightstown is enjoying a renaissance with the town becoming a favourite for good restaurants, art galleries, clothing stores and interior décor.

Several luxury resorts and developments in the area have breathed new life into this attractive town, whose jetty was once a hub of activity, filled with the hustle and bustle of the passengers for the Bridgetown schooner.

The intervening years had seen the town slipping into disrepair so it is heartening to see such an important part of Barbados’ heritage receiving a facelift.

Shopping in St. James

Several Bridgetown stores have opened branches in the popular shopping area known as Sunset Crest. Visitors and locals alike can be seen at the three malls that make up Sunset Crest where the complete shopping experience is offered.
Fashion, furniture, food and banking and once again, everyone’s favourite coffee shop! St James also boasts a selection of exclusive boutiques, either in the luxury hotels or in the tiny side roads in Holetown, where exquisite examples of the latest fashions can be found.

Another attractive St James shopping area is the Chattel House Village, a collection of brightly painted shops that includes the excellent Freedom Art Gallery. The collection of work from Caribbean artists that is gathered together at Freedom is well worth a visit.

Shopping in St. Michael

Bridgetown As St Michael shopping encompasses the capital city of Bridgetown, it is here that the greatest selection of shops can be found.

One of the first shopping centres to be encountered by cruise ship passengers is the recently renovated Pelican Village, a collection of craft shops and local restaurants. Shopping there is quite often accompanied by live entertainment from a traditional Tuk Band or Steel Pan player.

The main street, Broad Street, offers an enticing selection of duty free shopping including top jeweler’s outlets as well as all leading brands of clothing, cosmetics, wines and liqueurs.

Parallel to Broad Street you will find Swan Street, a pedestrian-only collection of footwear and fabric shops as well as a fantastic selection of tiny shops offering everything from backpacks to alarm clocks.

Shopping in Christ Church

The South Coast has several good shopping areas and in recent years the choices for clothes and other types of shopping have increased dramatically. Everything from Balinese furniture to Italian focaccio can be found along Highway One, the coast road that runs from the outskirts of Bridgetown to Oistins.
Coconut Walk is a relatively new parade of shops that specialises in great men’s and women’s clothing, Quayside Mall is also a good place to go shopping with a variety of shops that includes a branch of Lazy Days, Barbados’ ever popular beach and surf wear shops, souvenir shops, stylish women’s clothing, souvenir t shirts and a photo shop. They also have an excellent coffee shop!

St. Lawrence Gap is mainly famous for its nightlife but shopping in The Gap is also fun, the attractive Chattel House Village is home to several craft and clothing shops. There are several small boutiques to be found along The Gap as well as craft vendors who ply their trade from makeshift stalls.

Shopping in Barbados is many different things to many different people. Visitors seek out the crafts and the duty-free offerings while locals look for everything from everyday essentials to luxury items. Whatever you are looking for, you are sure to find it in the shops of Barbados.
