THE Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) of Barbados 2005 season got under way last Saturday with a Open League at the National Stadium recently. The meet flowed smoothly and efficiently with a good turnout of athletes from both schools and clubs as if to set the tone for the rest of the season. Liann Kellman (Lester Vaughn) won the women's Open 60m in 7.5 seconds and the 150 m in 18.2 seconds. Angelique Stephens (Pacers Track Club) won the women's Open 300m in 40.1 seconds, while Ramon Gittens (Lester Vaughn) won the men's Open 300m in 34.0 seconds. The men's mile was won by Jason Gilkes (unattached) in 4:44:5 mins.

Jerrad Mason won the Primary School boys' 150m in 19.9 seconds. Zoe Bradshaw won the Primary School girls' 60m in 9.6 seconds, while Joshua Gay won the boys' 60m in 9.1 seconds.

The women's Open Long Jump was won by Kamilah Burke (Alleyne) with a leap of 4.60m, while Orlando Richards (Alleyne) won the men's Open Long Jump in 6.16m. Kofi Worrell (Lester Vaughn) won the Under-17 boys' Shot Putt with a distance of 13.43m.

During the meet, several elections were held by the AAA for the posts of coaches, rep (Alwyn Babb), male athletes' rep (Reynald Walters), female athletes' rep (Angela Jackson), officials' rep (Jasmine Forde) and clubs' rep (Tony Williams). Immediately following the elections Obadele Thompson, who also volunteered his services as an official, took the opportunity to give an inspirational talk to the athletes.

The Open League Series continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday with an even larger turnout expected.
