With their blend of youth and experience, the Bulls completed the first round of the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s Premier League tournament on Sunday with another easy victory – 97-80 – over Berger Senators at the Barbados Community College. The win allowed Clapham to finish their seven first round games with a league best 6-1 record, their only blemish a stunning one-point loss to Tridents last week. Led by veteran point-guard Ryan Leacock who scored a season-high 29 points, the Bulls led 52-42 at the break, and never looked back. Senators, battling relegation for the first time in over a decade, have displayed a great fighting spirit, but simply do not have the manpower to avoid the cellar. Once again, they were always in striking distance of the Bulls, but with Jeremy Gill and Mark Foster also playing well, a Clapham victory was never in doubt. In the night’s marquee game, Passoa Station Hill Cavaliers badly needed a win to remain in the top four of the standings, and did just enough to get it, edging Nation/Nico DC United 64-63. DC started the game red-hot, snatching a 12-3 lead even though their main player Sidney Rowe was on the sidelines. But everything changed when Kevin Austin found a hot streak. The dreadlocked swingman hit three shots in a row, the Cavaliers found a rhythm and took a 37-28 lead into the dressing room at the break. For DC United, Henry Richards shrugged off a horrid shooting performance in the first half, to start attacking the basket, and also scoring from the free-throw line. DC’s coach Ryan Straughn implored his team to put the ball in the post to Tyrone Alexander, and success also came through the big-man’s play. The Cavaliers were lousy from the charity stripe, missing seven straight free-throws at one stage, but as Austin continued to shoot well, and Kelvin Patterson-Browne also got involved, the Cavs were able to hold on. Summarized scores: Clapham Bulls 95 (52) (R. Leacock 29. J. Gill 20, M. Foster 14, A.J Pierre 13, K. Leacock 10) Senators 80 (42) (A. Lovell 32, H. Browne 13, P. Burton 11, M. Riley 10) Cavaliers 64 (37) (K. Austin 24, K. Sealy 17) DC United 63 (28) (H. Richards 22, T. Alexander 15) Compliments of the Nation News
