football BARBADOS - Under-14 interschool football final
Pine Hill St. Leonard's Boys finally succumbed in extra time to The Lodge School's determined onslaught when Wednesdays Under-14 interschool football final came off at the National Stadium, Waterford. The lone goal scorer, striking in the 53rd, was Lodge's captain, Darian King, who was later named finals' Most Valuable Player. Lodge were the underdogs early on and at the start it was all going St. Leonards' way. The ball never even left the Lodge School half in the first five minutes. However, the St. Leonard's boys didn't convert their possession and gave Lodge the chance to build an offence. Although Lodge had less possession, they looked the more disciplined and purposeful side when they did have the ball. By halftime, King had already begun to look dangerous. In the second half, the early one-sidedness was gone, but neither goalie was seriously challenged, except in the 47th minute when a series of clean, incisive passes put the ball at the feet of Lodge's Rico Clarke, whose shot was then easily saved. Lodge supported their offence with dogged work in the back, especially by the diminutive Jamal Moennig-Lewis, a perennial thorn in St. Leonard's side. No one who saw the start of the game would have expected it to be scoreless after regulation, but into extra time it went, where the pace of the game picked up immediately. It only took three minutes of extra time for Lodge to draw blood with King's deft strike. Not a minute later St. Leonard's were on the charge and only an awkward save from the Lodge School goalie, Akeem Payne, kept them under. Payne saved his team once again, stopping a 40 yard bomb from St. Leonard's Kadeem Lathan in the final minute of play to secure the championship for Lodge. In the third place match-up Combemere trounced Ellerslie 3-0 with goals coming from Roston Clarke in the 12th minute, Kraigg Brathwaite in the 15th and Robert Jardine in the 30th.
