Newly-promoted Banks Spurs came out all guns blazing against Attie Joseph Spooners Hill on Wednesday night in the Barbados Netball Association Division 1 competition, but run out of firepower half-way through the contest, succumbing 44-49 to the former knockout champions.

It was all Spurs in the first quarter as their speed and skill caught Spooners Hill off guard and Spurs finished the quarter comfortably ahead 15-9.

That was to be Spurs’ biggest lead of the game as Spooners Hill came into the second quarter ready for business. There were also some changes in the line-up, mainly because of a knee injury to Paula Greaves.

Maria King switched from centre with goal defence, Denise Forde and Sandra Forde came into the game as goal keeper for Greaves.

These changes worked for Spooners Hill and they were able to draw within one goal of Spurs at the half, 24-25. Both teams made minor changes in the third quarter with Greaves moving back to goal keeper, and this helped Spooners Hill to a 39-34 lead.

The Spurs’ defence again performed well.

Coming up against Barbados best goal shooter, Lydia Bishop, they were still able to make a number of interceptions and break the rhythm of the other attacking players. The team however was again let down by the shooters.

Cheryl Piggott especially was able to nail three long-range shots early in the second quarter and, instead of counting her lucky stars, she continued to go for long-range shots and missed several others.

She finished with 20 goals of 37 attempts. Coleen Griffith, playing at the goal attack, had 24 of 31.

Bishop, Spooners Hill’s champion goal shooter, did not disappoint her fans. She dominated the shooting area and scored 42 of her 48 attempts. Goal attackJulia Wickham netted seven of 14.
