Flashback - Manuel Crespo (right) of the Courtesy team, attempts to play
the ball while being pursued by players of then opposing Mango Bay team
during their previous clash which Cockspur won 5 - 4.
WEATHER permitting today, fans could be treated to an action-packed evening
of polo as the curtain comes down on the Barbados Open tournament sponsored
by Colombian Emeralds.
Large crowds are expected at the Waterhall ground in
St. James to witness the evening's double header which concludes the tournament
presented in association with the Barbados Tourism Authority.
The matches were scheduled for last Sunday at Waterhall, but were postponed
after rain made conditions unsuitable for play.
The break in play would have given may cause some teams to lose their
momentum, but would gave players an opportunity to refresh themselves
and rethink their strategy moving into today's matches.
Much attention will be focused on Cockspur team as they have played unbeaten
in qualifying for the final. Now one win away from claiming the championship,
Cockspur will be making every effort to ensure the opportunity for them
to make their first claim on the championship does not slip away.
A well-organised unit, Cockspur has played with much purpose so far throughout
the tournament. They pulled off a thrilling 7 - 5 victory over team Suzuki
in the opening match of the tournament and will be cherishing thoughts
of recording another victory over the Suzuki team.
Cole, playing off an international one-goal handicap, will have in his
line-up his son Alex Cole playing off a two-goal handicap, along with
international six-goal player Rafael Silva from Uruguay and Pablo Crespin
a four-goal player from Argentina.
Silva and Crespin have been the mainstay of Cockspur team and they will
again be spearheading the team's strategy in the bid today to bring the
team its first success.
Cockspur, however, will have quite a big task ahead of them as Bayley
and his Suzuki team, the defending champions, will be eager to avenge
their earlier loss to Cockspur.
Also playing off a one-goal handicap, Bayley will have in his line-up
the dynamic brothers Gaston and Max Moore playing off international six-goal
and four-goal handicaps respectively. Philip Tempro, handicapped one goal,
will complete the lineup.
Gaston Moore has been the live wire for Suzuki and combines well with
Max, who has thrilled fans with his powerful striking of the ball.
Highland winless in three encounters will be seeking to salvage some measure
of glory today and to avenge the 7 - 5 loss to Courtesy last Thursday.
Williams and his team of Jeff Evelyn, Richard Gooding and international
six-goal player Malcolm Borwick from England, have been slow starters,
but come on strong as the play progress to offer very serious challenges
to their opponents.
Coutesy, under the captaincy of Sir Charles Williams boast of a very tough
players in Manuel Crespo, Fortunato Gomez Romero (4) and Jamie Dickson
(4). These three players are very difficult to contain, and have pushed
themselves to the limit to keep their team in the game.
This was quite evident last Friday evening when they went under 6 - 8
to Suzuki in the semi-finals
