racing BARBADOS - horse racing Diana Jones Diana Jones after triple - Friday 09, July-2004
Three of the 12-horse field were bred by her: Annie’s Song, owned by All Star Racing and trained by husband Chally; Earthmover, owned by Sir Charles Williams and Elias Haloute and trained by Andrew Nunes; and Songbird, jointly owned by the Joneses and trained by Chally. Fillies have dominated this race in recent years, winning the last three events, starting with Spook in 2001, Return To Sender in 2002 and Sweet Dreams last year. Tomorrow’s race will also be dominated by fillies – representing nine of the 15 horses entered. Sir Charles Williams’ Lady Constance, winner of the Banks Barbados Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown, has been installed joint pre-race favourite with the outstanding Kabul. Sir Charles’ lone win of the Midsummer Classic came via Secret Habitat, in 1993, and he will be looking to one of his three entries, Snooky Lou, Smokehouse Sue or Lady Constance, with the latter having the best chance of the three, to provide him with his second win. Veteran handler Bill Marshall, the most successful trainer in the event, will be going after his eighth winner. His wins came via Country Squire (1985), Liquid Bliss (1987), Coo-Bird (1989), Seeing Red (1990), Credit Note (1991), Secret Habitat (1993), and Swift And Sure (1997). Marshall will be represented by Captain PJ, Super Style and Starburst. Either one of the three is capable of taking the event if he runs up to his best form. Owner DeVere Davis, who won with Coo-Bird in 1989, is looking to Super Style to give him his second win.
