racing BARBADOS - horse racing Pinnacle Feeds Midsummer Creole Classic
Saturday 10, July-2004
Lady Constance, owned by Sir Charles Williams and trained by Andrew Nunes, is one of only two horses to finish ahead of Kabul in his outstanding career to date. Kabul’s first and only defeat came in the Banks Barbados Guineas on April 12. The Faraway Stables-owned,Clayton Greenidge-trained colt was beaten into third position by Lady Constance and Captain PJ in the 1 570 metres event. In that race, he shortened appreciably in the straight and was passed first by Lady Constance and then by Captain PJ, and gave the impression that today’s distance of 1 800 metres, which is also the Derby distance, might be beyond him. It appears, however, that he might not have been at his best that day. This was confirmed in his subsequent start on June 5, C.O. Williams Construction day. On that occasion, he competed in the 1 570 metres of the Secret Habitat Trophy Condition event and romped home by a massive 121/2 lengths, his biggest victory to date. It is true his opponents did not amount to much, but he took along the top weight of 129 pounds and gave lots of weight and a bad beating to Earthmover and Scarlet Prince, two of his opponents today. What will make it easier for him today is the fact that speedsters Smokehouse Sue and Snooky Lou have also been withdrawn, and this has robbed the race of horses with early speed. With no other speedsters of note in the race, Kabul can dictate the pace to suit himself and quicken from his field 400 metres out and go on to win his race. Kabul’s stiffest opposition should come from the Bill Marshall-trained trio of Captain PJ, Super Style and Starburst, and the Chally Jones-trained Annie’s Song. Captain PJ looks the one most likely to chase home the selection, while Annie’s Song, Super Style, Starburst and Before Time can fight it out for the smaller ends of the purse. Highland Waters can bounce back to take the Pinnacle Feeds Paddy Bird Trophy Condition, while Sugar Daddy looks the one to be on in the Pinnacle Feeds Coo Bird Trophy Handicap. Sugar Daddy has disappointed in his most recent starts but he can put those disappointing performances behind by taking today’s 1 800 metres event. Trainer Andrew Nunes seems to hold all the aces in the Pinnacle Feeds Incitatus Trophy Condition with his three entries One Time, Classic Deputy and Caesar, with the first-named seeming to have a slight edge. Today’s selections:
Race 2: Highland Waters – Never Say Yes – Reef Knot Race 3: One Time – Classic Deputy – Lubricator Race 4: Swade – Giovanetti – Cry Me A River Race 5: Sugar Daddy – Secret Prince – Beach Port Race 6: Prima Donna – Ryan’s Fancy – Sugar Anne – Sonata Race 7: Kabul – Captain PJ, Before Time – Super Style Race 8: Esperanza – Bewitched – Fearless Dancer.
