Date February 27, 2008 Compliments of the Nation News IT WAS HARDLY SURPRISING that double crown champions Springer Memorial girls and Combermere boys carried away the lion's share of the awards from the 2007/2008 Super Centre/JB's interschools volleyball championships. Springer retained both the league and knockout titles with victories over the Barbados Community College (BCC) in the league finals and a five sets thriller over Coleridge & amp; Parry (CP) in the finals of the knockout. Combermere boys needed to come from two sets down to take the knockout title from CP after the lads had deposed former rulers The Lodge School in the semis. The finals proved to be most exciting in recent years
with both events going to five sets. Springer beat CP into another second
spot, 25-9, 19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 16-14. Combermere triumphed over CP,
20-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-13. <

Springer Memorial defeated Coleridge and Parry (CP) 25-17, 25-5, 25-15 and Combermere beat Barbados Community College 25-21, 25-15, 21-17. Springer were beaten by CP in the semi-finals last year and also fell at their hands during the league. "In the first set, the girls were a bit timid because of their defeat by CP last time. They had a feeling they couldn't get it done and with the help of Miss [Andrea] Nichols, we got them to calm down and got them focused on the game," said teacher Donna Taylor who coaches the team. "The second game was just a blow-out. We got into their minds: 'If we believe it, we can achieve it.' Akela Blenman, the captain, really lifted their spirits and everything went well from there." < Read more > Date February 04, 2007 Compliments of the Nation Newsby KENMORE BYNOE THE LODGE BOYS are the new NSC/Super Centre Interschool Volleyball Knockout champions! Demonstrating their theme of Fighting Back, The Lodge boys exacted revenge on Harrison College at the Barbados Community College gym to win the crown 25-23, 27-29, 15-10, in three sets of entertaining play. During the league The Lodge defeated Harrison College in the preliminaries to enter the finals, but lost it, as one of their key players, Shamarh Brooks, was on tour with the national cricket team. Once again Brooks was absent on cricket duty but Ronald Rice and Rico Brathwaite lifted their game to a level to deny College the double crown. |
