Players showed their talent as a small but vocal crowd urged them on. The tournament started on Saturday, with the final phase of the men's and womenÕs leagues yesterday. Next week the international players will arrive on the island for what is expected to be an even bigger and more entertaining weekend of competition. News And they sizzled too. That best describes the American and Canadian pairs who spiked and blocked their way to the top honours in the grand finals of the Sizzlin Sand Barbados Beach Bash at Brandons Beach last Sunday. Defending 2004 Barbados Beach Bash Champions in the women's tournament, Karen Sutherland and Cindy Phillips made light work of their opponents from Trinidad and Tobago, Stephanie and Pauline Woodrofe, in straight sets 21-7, 21-11 to capture their second consecutive title and $US2 500 in prize money. Defending 2004 men's champions Philippe Pignol and Robin Darchicourt did not have the dream final like Sutherland and Phillips. Instead, they had to deal with the nightmare in the form of two six-foot, five-inch Americans who were intent on winning their first ever event outside of the United States. < Read more > Beach volleyball a smash! The season-ending Barbados Beach Bash, from November 4 to 6, the final event of the 2005 Sizzlin' Sand Caribbean Beach Bash Series, lived up to all expectations. Hosted by Leisure Entertainment in conjunction with the Barbados Volleyball Association, 23 teams representing the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe and hosts Barbados competed in this double gender event which offered $US10 000 in prize money. The hundreds of spectators who turned up for the three days of intense competition got the chance to experience excellent beach volleyball and the fantastic atmosphere that surrounds Sizzlin' Sand Beach Volleyball events. Taking top honours in the men's division were the Florida based pair of Michael DiPierro and team-mate Steve Grotowski, who defeated 2004 winners Philippe Pignol and Robin Darchicourt of Guadeloupe 21-16, 21-16 to earn the US$2 500 first prize. For their efforts, Pignol and Darchicourt received the second prize of US$1 500. Third place went to Elwyn Oxley and Nolan Tash after they defeated Shane Mark and Winston Gittens in a thrilling third place play-off 21-19, 18-21, 15-9 to earn US$1 000. On the women's court the Canadian pair of Karen Sutherland and Cindy Philips made it two years in a row that they have won this event when they easily defeated the Trinidadian pair of Pauline and Stephanie Woodrofe 21-7, 21-11 to take the top prize of US$2 500. The Woodrofe sisters collected US$1 500 for second place while the Barbadian pair of Lauren Whitehall and Sharon Bovell defeated Melanie Deband and Marie Villa 21-15, 21-16 and received US$1 000. The event was also attended by special guest and president of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Council Christopher Sinjin Smith. Smith, along with president of the United States Beach Volleyball Referees Association Steve Owen, also took part in training sessions for players and officials ahead of the tournament. The Sizzlin' Sand Beach Volleyball series has clearly demonstrated that beach volleyball in Barbados and in the Caribbean has come of age. The support from the hundreds of fans who turned out despite the inclement weather for the finals was testimony to the appeal of the event and its rising status as a premier beach event on the Barbados and the Caribbean sports tourism calendar. |
