racing BARBADOS - horse racing - Bill Marshall Date November 01, 2005 by Robert Bourque. Compliments of the Nation News
He made a huge contribution to racing on the island by attracting English owners who made racing more competitive over the years. Bill trained horses for Sir Charles Williams, Vere Davis, Gill Wilson, Mr Paul Locke, a former president of the race horse owners association in England, Derrick and Gay Smith and Sir Martyn and Lady Sally Arbib whose horse Blast Of Storm was a three-time winner of the Sandy Lane Gold Cup. Bill also lent his expertise to the development of the young jockeys, especially the trainees in the 2004/2005 session of the Jockeys School. He was the trainer who put most of the inexperienced lads on his horses at exercise in the mornings and he would also pass on his vast knowledge of race riding to them Further, the "Guvnor", as he was affectionately called, played a pivotal role in the advancement of the careers of many young trainers such as Robert Peirce and William Clarke. |
