sailing BARBADOS - sailing- 27th Heineken Regatta 'Bruggadung 11' continues to sail successfully
Bruggadung II recovered from a fifth place finish in the first race on Friday, to win the first race on Saturday while finishing second in the second race. This left Bruggadung 11 tied with Expensive Habit skippered by John Bishop from St. Thomas. But on Sunday, the Bajan crew came to grips with continuing high winds and rough seas, and aided by a wind shift on the last leg which put them in a commanding position, they went on to win the final race by 37 seconds ahead of their closest competitor. This win follows their successes in the Tobago Race Week, and the Mount Gay regatta in Barbados. Both of these events were won by Bruggadung II last year. Their very competitive Spinnaker 6 class included 12 boats hailing from St. Thomas, USA, St Maartin, the Netherlands, Antigua, and Guadeloupe. Over 200 boats participated in 20 classes in what has
become the largest and most competitive regatta in the Caribbean. Sailors
from around the world participated in the regatta, many of them sailing
bareboats boats that are chartered without crew. This regatta is a major
money earner for St. Maarten. (AB) |
