Compliments of the Nation News BARBADOS WON their first Seniors title at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships at Caymanas, St Catherine, in Jamaica last weekend. The team of Ricky Skeete and Robert Piggott won by nine shots in the four-day championships. They combined with 72, 71, 66 and 68 for 277, winning convincingly from the Jamaican pair of John Smith and George Hugh. The win was the first for the Bajans since a maiden historic victory in the Hoerman Cup in 2004. Skeete, a former Barbados cricketer and Piggott, the former Barbados champion, were level with the Jamaicans after the first day but picked up three shots every day thereafter. The Dominican Republic won the Hoerman Cup, the most prestigious of the five titles at stake by eight shots from Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados, led by James Johnson, finished fifth. Johnson was the only local player to shoot under par and had scores of 67 and 69 on the last two days. Johnson's 67 on the third day was the lowest by any Hoerman Cup golfer. He was recognised for this achievement as well as shooting the top overall score (287), jointly with John Paul Garrido of the Dominican Republic The Mid-Amateur team of Ansari Muhajiri and Terry Hanton would have gained useful experience in their first outing, despite finishing last. Barbados were fifth in the women's championship, from which teenager Mary Ince would have gained valuable experience in her maiden outing as a senior. Manager Charles Edey said Ince, 15, performed creditably, as did Scot Foster, who made his maiden appearance as well. The Super Seniors team of Bill Weir and John Reid, competing for the first time, was fourth. Play in the Super Seniors and Mid-Amateur championships was restricted to 54 holes due to stoppages associated with rain. |
