>> trinidad >> tobago>> golf TOBAGO - South Caribbean Golf Open 2005 Date August 24, 2005 Compliments of the Barbados Nation News FORMER WEST INDIES OPENING BATSMAN Desmond Haynes and Hadley Byer are flying the Barbados flag as representatives of the Arawak Cement Company in the Readymix/TCL Group's Fourth South Caribbean Golf Open in Tobago. The tournament started yesterday and ends on Friday. It was originally scheduled for July 14 to 17 at the Tobago Plantations Beach and Golf Resort but was postponed because of the passage of tropical storm Emily. The Readymix/TCL Group Golf Open has one of the most attractive prize boards in amateur golf, with 30 main prizes and 45 day prizes valued at over $20 000 being awarded. The overall winner of the championship division earns a set of Pro Series Callaway X 18 irons. After his retirement from international cricket in the 1990s, Haynes made a serious return to golf, and his ambition now is to represent Barbados on the international scene professionally. The 49-year-old has played in several charity tournaments in the Caribbean, the United States and Britain, the most recent being a celebrity game in Jamaica. He has a handicap of 6.5 and a best score of two under par. Byer, 43, is the managing director of Uni-Source International
Corporation and is also a member of the Barbados Golf Club. In his ten
years of playing the game, he has been affiliated with the Barbados Golf
Association and has a handicap of 10. Haynes, with a handicap of ten, placed third in his division while Byer did not place. Haynes said the entire event was exciting and provided an opportunity for them to come up against some of the top players in the game from throughout the Caribbean. < Read more >
