BARBADOS fought back brilliantly to bowl out Guyana for 211 at stumps, after Guyana cruised to 100 without loss on day one of the Carib Beer Challenge semi-final at the Carlton Club yesterday.
Guyana was invited to bat first after Barbados won the toss, and the opening pair of Sewnarine Chattergon (51) and Krishna Arjune (55) patiently built up a strong foundation for the innings, while Barbados was grounding a number of their catching opportunities in the field.
After the visitors went to lunch on 54, they returned and brought up their century marker in 284 minutes off 270 balls and it looked as though the home team was not going to make any head way in the Guyana batting order.
However, experience pacer Ian Bradshaw broke the partnership when he had Arjune caught in the gully by the Barbados captain Ryan Hinds in the 45th over.Arjunes innings lasted 180 minutes and he struck five fours. < Read more >
Guyana made 211 in their first innings and survived an onslaught by the Barbados bowlers to finish on 22 without loss when play was called off with two overs and three balls left in the second day due to a heavy shower.
Hinds was trapped leg before wicket for 52 off the bowling of Guyana's captain Reon King. Hinds innings included eight fours off 98 balls and lasted two hours and ten minutes.
Bradshaw who batted until the end and was the last batsman out scored 81 in a well played innings which lasted three hours and ten minutes and included six fours and four huge sixes. < Read more >
Floyd Reifer was the toast of Barbados' cricket yesterday. Short of runs for the entire 2005-2006 Carib Beer Series, the experienced left-hander hit a vital century that earned Barbados a place in the Challenge final against Trinidad and Tobago, starting on Saturday at Guaracara Park.Reifer battled discomfort in his right hand for the latter half of the innings to make 101 that denied Guyana victory in their semi-final clash at the Carlton Club in Black Rock.Set 282 to win, Barbados ended on 268 for seven and earned its place in the final after capturing first innings lead. Here, Reifer acknowledges the applause on reaching his century.
