CARIBBEAN - cricket history

From their historic first test match in England in 1928 when test cricket was just 50 years old, to the present day, the West Indies has exhibited style, flair and tremendous ability. Learie Constantine was the first black cricketing star and the excellence of his batting, bowling and fielding earned him a contract with the prestigious Lancashire side.

George Headley followed, a batsman of extraordinary skill, who went on to captain the West Indies team in 1948.

Brian Lara congratulationsBrian Lara, seen here congratulated by his colleagues, spoke at the Barbados Cricket Association's Awards ceremony for the 2002 domestic season.

"I see the West Indies' first Test series victory in 1950 against England as the renaissance in the history of West Indies cricket, the rebirth of West Indies cricket,

During that period in the 50s and 60s, at the same time, we were seeking independence as small Caribbean islands from Britain. Cricket represented freedom. It exemplified freedom. It gave us dignity and it gave us pride. It also was the unifying force back in the 50s and 60s for all West Indian people."
Brian Lara

In the 60's The Windies were the kings of the game and ruled international cricket for two decades with the awesome force of its fast bowlers and powerful batsmen.

Joel Garner Joel Garner or 'Big Bird' to his fans, seen here in action (click to purchase this original signed limited edition poster on line,) Andy Roberts, the Jamaican Michael Holding, Colin Croft and the late, great Malcolm Marshall were names whose mere mention could strike fear into batsmen the world over!

Andy RobertsFrom Robert's arrival (seen here in action) in the early 70's to Marshall's retirement in 1991, the pace of International Test cricket was set by the West Indies' fast bowlers. Between them they took 1211 Test wickets at a superb combined average of 22.5 runs apiece. Marshall, who died in his homeland, Barbados, in 1999 led the gang with 376 scalps!

Sir Garfield SobersGarfield St. Auburn Sobers was a supreme batsman, he could bowl pace or spin and was a brilliant fielder as well as being a superb captain. He is without a doubt the worlds greatest all rounder.

And today the West Indies captain Brian Lara is up there with the greatest.

The Nation News keeping us informed...

Lara the modern game’s greatest exponent of batsmanship took the burden of all his West Indian people on his shoulders and transformed despair into a triumph.

Brian Lara West Indies captain reaching for a world recordAs Christians around the world celebrated the ascendancy of the Prince of Peace into heaven, there were also celebrations here as the Prince of Port-of-Spain rose to cricketing heights. More info

On Easter Sunday the sheer statistical weight of his second triple hundred speaks for itself, as did his first, the unforgettable 375 at the same Antigua Recreation Ground ten years ago that was then Test cricket’s record score.

On Easter Monday Lara went to the summit of cricket becoming the first man to make a quadruple-century in a Test innings. Lara’s unconquered 400 proclaimed beyond doubt his status as the modern game’s No.1 player.
