BARBADOS - cricket archive- Carib Beer International Challenge Cricket Competition

Barbados will have a semifinal date with Guyana at Kensington Oval this weekend in the Carib Beer International Challenge Cricket Competition. The Bajans, who won the Carib Beer Series with an amazing 100 per cent record and 84 points, booked their spot several weeks ago, but had to wait until yesterday for their opponents to be confirmed.

Guyana destroyed Kenya by an innings and 114 runs to move to 40 points alongside Trinidad and Tobago. Guyana got the semis berth by virtue of their win over the Trinbagonians.

Barbados will be seeking to maintain their superb record and retain the International Challenge and keep their hands on the major trophies in West Indies cricket.

The other semifinal, starting Thursday, will see second-placed Jamaica taking on the third-placed Windward Islands.

Guyana 444 beat Kenya (130 & 191) by an innings and 114 runs

Georgetown - Guyana took only 45 minutes on the final day to formalise their final round victory at Bourda on Day 4 of Round 7. Kenya, 172 for seven overnight, folded meekly and failed to win a match in the tournament.

Leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo snatched three for 46 to take eight in the match, while veteran left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell had three for 43.

From a position of zero points after losing their first three away matches, Guyana did well to be in contention for the Carib Challenge Trophy.

The efforts of captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Man-Of-The-Match Ramnaresh Sarwan, who were away doing Test duties, will be crucial if Guyana are to create what would be a major upset against the rampant Barbadians.

Chanderpaul was loud in praise for his players, particularly Sarwan's 199, his highest first class score.

"Congratulations to my team and Sarwan for getting 199, we will go to Barbados and hope to keep the Guyana flag flying high," Chanderpaul said.

West Indies "B" (197 & 237) lost to Windward Islands (427 & 11-0) by ten wickets

ST GEORGE'S - Pacer Fernix Thomas grabbed five for 49 off 21 overs and hurried the Windward Islands to a comprehensive victory and a semifinal meeting away to Jamaica.

From an overnight 175 for six, the West Indies "B" - having trailed by a whopping 230 runs on first innings - slipped into further trouble when Thomas sent back Ryan Austin in the day's first over.

Dwight Washington joined Kenroy Williams and the pair resisted with a 51-run eighth-wicket stand that ended when Thomas dislodged Washington, caught behind at 230 for eight.

Without addition to the score, Williams gave a sharp knee-high return catch to captain Rawl Lewis, for the leg-spinner to snatch the first of two lower-order wickets.

Williams hit 55 to be his team's second highest scorer in the innings, after Austin Richards (59).

Jamaica (200 & 394-3 dec) beat Leeward Islands (190 & 144 by 261 runs

ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica - Leg-spinner Odean Brown and pacer Andrew Richardson captured four wickets each as Jamaica recorded a huge win at Alpart to secure second spot with 52 points.

The Leewards ended bottom of the table with 16 points.

The end came 20 minutes before lunch when Dane Weston was run out by Keith Hibbert for a duck, leaving Ridley Jacobs not out on 22.

Richardson's four wickets cost 23 runs and came from 13 overs, while Brown conceded 44 runs off 14.1 overs. (AP/CMC)

The 2004 Carib Beer International Challenge Trophy, won by Barbados to complete a phenomenal “double double”, is the most significant among the long list of successes captain Courtney Browne has enjoyed in his long stint in national colours. Read more
