As Chris Harper introduced the final
Cool Jazz for the year he was aware that many in the audience would
miss their monthly musical treat. The shows have been of a consistently
high standard and the finale for 2006 was no exception
In the pre-music fashion show, present and past Banks Calendar
Girls were among the attractive models displaying the latest fashions
from Traffic Boutique
Echoing the success of the Stefan Walcott big band, Barbados
was once again treated to a big band sound, showcasing a formidable brass
lineup of Andre Woodvine, Kelly Ann Patrick and Chris Harper on Sax, Andrew
Lynch on trumpet and Dwayne Gill on Trombone
Stefan Walcott on keyboards, Julian Griffith on Bass and James
Lovell on drums all played their part in creating a memorable evening
and an excellent backing band for the guest performers
Betty Griffith-Payne was the first guest performer to take the stage
and her bossa nova version of Night and Day, accompanied by a bluesy Andre
Woodvine, was a crowd favourite
Terencia “TC” Coward was warmly received by the audience
and her rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “All I do”, accompanied
by Chris Harper’s soulful sax was one of the evening’s many
highlights
Featured newcomer in April’s show, Kelly Ann Patrick, took center
stage with a stirring performance of Arturo Tappin’s Java. Kelly
Ann and bass player Julian Griffith will both be attending the Berklee
Summer school and their fans are looking forward to sharing and enjoying
the results
Then it was time for David “Ziggy” Walcott
to thrill the audience with his pan playing. Both Stevie Wonder’s
‘Superstition’ and the Stefan Walcott original ‘For
Vern’ gave full expression to his expertise and this, along
with the excellence of the backing band, was a fitting finale for
a fabulous series of shows.
As Notes to Note producer Chris Harper
bade his audience farewell he thanked everyone for making Cool Jazz
Series 4 a success, and assured them that he was already working on
an exciting Cool Jazz Series 5 for next year
