The third show of the Cool Jazz 07 season opened
with the Digicel Discovery segment. Spoken word Artistes Adrian Green,
GiGi & Kelly ‘Phoenix’ Chase presented thought-provoking
pieces that were warmly received by the audience
The prize giveaways were popular, these lucky members
of the audience both won a Weekend for two at the plum Tree Club
This group received tickets for the play
‘Going for love’
Then it was time for the big event! The
‘Night of Kaiso Jazz’ featured arranger /keyboardist Stefan
Walcott and his high-energy big band comprising 16 of the island’s
finest musicians
The signature sound of this high-energy combination owed
a lot to the ten horn lineup of, from left to right Justin Worrell on
Bass, Ryan Blackman, Paul Thorne & Shawn Layne on Trumpets. Hugh Griffith,
Kellyann Patrick, Andre Woodvine, Nicholas Timothy & Roger Jordan
on Saxophones.
Andre Woodvine’s flute solo
was enjoyed by all but perhaps none more so that his wife Louise, in the
foreground of our picture
Drummer James Lovell was in his element,
clearly enjoying the opportunity to be a part of the fabulous big
band sound. He was one of the musicians whose arrangements were featured
Sax solos included Nicholas Timothy, Andre Woodvine
Kelly Ann Patrick and Roger Jordan
Band leader, pianist and arranger Stefan
Walcott did not disappoint the many fans created at last year’s
Cool Jazz performance, presenting an exciting new twist on many old
favourites from a variety of genres
Janell Headley gave an extremely moving rendition of the
Billie Holiday classic “Strange Fruit”
As always, Producer Chris Harper was there to acknowledge
the invaluable support of his sponsors, applaud his incredible performers
and to thank his audience for contributing to the success of the evening
