BARBADOS
- Cool Jazz Series 3
August Sunday 28th 2005
As Chris Harper made the introduction, patrons were
already wondering how they were going to manage without their favourite
monthly show. It was billed as the ‘All Star’ Edition
of Cool Jazz and it lived up to that promise in the first class performance
that the musical talent delivered at the final show of the 2005 Notes
To Notes/Barbados National Terminal Co. Ltd Cool Jazz Series III,
at the Southern Palms Hotel.
The fashions from Traffic Boutique were well received and it is
probable that many from the audience will find themselves heading
for the Wildey based boutique.
An attractive range of casual fashion opened the presentation.
The evening outfits were beautiful, testament to the
fact that glitz and glamour are the keywords of the coming season.
The fashion show drew a couple of young spectators, designers of
the future perhaps…
A Night When the Stars Shone Brightly
The final 2005 Cool Jazz for the year featured an excellent
lineup of musicians who obviously enjoyed themselves as much as the
audience did.
Andre Woodvine gave an inspired performance of his original piece
Citronella. The song has a bouncy Caribbean jazz feel to it and of
course offered a prominent solo by Andre, known for his prolific jazz
compositions. The artiste’s other contribution was Fix it on
Monday, a catchy melody on a dub groove.
The ‘night of the stars’ included in the musical stratosphere
Eyan Alleyne, with the performance of U Came from his new album
Relatively Unknown which was launched at April’s Cool Jazz.
In true ‘Hog It’ style, he delivered the vocal alternative
rock tune with all the stage savvy that we have grown accustomed
to seeing from him and of course in keeping with the trend of the
night – that titillating live wire solo that makes your hair
stand on end.
The evening’s indulgences included an offering of a re-make
of Vern Best’s Boom Byeh from James Lovell’s CD - First
Born. This featured an Afro-Caribbean groove with the bonus of a powerful
and ‘wicked’ solo by James that had some leaping to their
feet with instantaneous applause.
Kirk Layne on keyboards and Gregory Hunte on bass also delighted
patrons with their solos
Chris Harper took time out from his administrative duties to
remind us that apart from producing the popular Cool Jazz series
he is first and foremost a musician!
Simply put, Paula Hinds wowed the crowd with her rendition of Barbara
Streisand’s, The Way We Were! She literally took the song down
a trail that had enchanting musical surprises for the listeners.
