Rhythmic experience with James Lovell and Ngoma at Cool Jazz
It can truly be said that “rhythm ruled” at the recent opening
of the Notes To Note – Barbados National Terminal Co. Ltd 2005 Cool
Jazz Series at the Southern Palms Hotel -

when James Lovell and his band Ngoma owned the stage
with a solid two-hours of performances. Many of the evening’s
offering were based off of tracks from James’ first album -
First Born. |
In a touching number that turned out to be one of the highlights
of the night, James invited one of his mentors Wayne ‘Poonka’
Willock to perform his popular ‘Tuk Band Rhythm’ with
the band. Poonka is seen here second from right. |

James paid homage to the genius of El Verno Del Congo with the
rendition of El Verno’s Boom Byeh which featured vocals by
Indra Rudder and Marissa Lindsay. The powerful voices of the songbirds
enhanced the bright, lively mood of the song which offered the creative
twist of a Latin feel. |
The night also featured the designs of Glen Brathwaithe. It was cool
fashion for a ‘cool’ evening. Models sported hand-painted
wraps done in a variety of ways. The designer showed the versatility of
the wrap as an item that could be worn as casual or formal attire.
 The
African art on display – in commemoration of Black History month
– attracted considerable attention. Seen here, a ceremonial mask
