CARRIACOU - country boys


Country Boys


Country Boys is an eight member band based in Carriacou. Anslem James is the leader of the group. It is an acoustic band with guitar, banjo, cuatro, mandolin and bass and the rhythm section comprises a drum machine, cowbell and congo drums. They play a variety of music with different styling.


The band was formed twelve years ago when the members started as a parang band with participation in the local parang festival. The band ceased it's participation in the competition about eight years ago.

In 2001 they resurrected themselves as an entertainment group and quickly found out that their music was widely appreciated, that served as the incentive to keep going.

The band has toured two Caribbean islands, Barbados and Trinidad sponsored by the ministry of tourism.

The last trip abroad was to the United Kingdom in June- July of this year where they performed in London and Huddersfield.

The largest island at the end of the Grenadines chain, best known for the thriving boat building trade established in the early 19th century.

The French were the first Europeans to settle and were soon joined by English and Scottish settlers. A proud and independent people, some of Scottish descent mixed with African. They are a beautiful, friendly people with diverse cultural roots.

Festivals and music are vital to these vibrant folk and the big Drum Dance is an African tradition originally performed on special occasions.

Hillsborough's four day Regatta is held during the first week of August. Hillsborough's four day Sailing Regatta is held during the first week of August. It is much more than a sailing regatta and visitors come from far and wide to enjoy the water and land based sports, street parties, cultural events and calypso.
The Parang Festival is held just before Christmas and is a great excuse for dancing in the street, eating great food and meeting wonderful, friendly people.
