BARBADOS - East Coast Beaches

The East Coast is renown for its rugged terrain and rough seas.
It has the biggest waves on the island and some of the most remote, wide stretches of beach.
There are warning signs along most of these beaches warning visitors not to swim, as the currents are strong and the undertow very dangerous. However there are small rock pools ideals places to cool off
However the east coast is also a surfers paradise...
this area of Barbados is very much less developed than the rest of the island, there are few permanent dwellings or businesses.
Bathsheba is a weekend hot-spot for locals it is a perfect place for a retreat.

St. John Beaches

CONSETS BAY
Barbados east coast Continuing along the coastline from St. Philip north you will enter the parish of St. John. The coastline here has its own unique appeal.
The steep winding but picturesque road takes you to the popular local resort of Conset Bay. After a safari like experience its time to relax, have a swim and watch the coulourful fishing boats mooring alongside with their catch.
Continuing north from Codrington College you will observe the tall overgrown chimney of the old Bath sugar factory, it's time to turn off for a visit to Bath.
Backed by a grove of casuarina trees the parking is 'cool and sweet'. There is an excellent public picnic area and changing facilities provided by the National Conservation Commission. The public facilities make this beach ideal for a family outing and it is particularly popular with the locals on a Bank Holiday. The swimming is safe with medium to small waves and slight undertow close to shore. There is usually a lifeguard in attendance and children can play in safety.

MARTINS BAY


Continuing along the eastern coastline or plunging down from Hackleton's Cliff you will discover the unspoilt fishing village of Martins Bay. This old village was once a stop on Barbados' one and only trainline. Running between 1881 to 1938 it must have been a wonderful way to visit the east coast of the island. The train left Bridgetown around 4pm in the afternoon from what is now the Fairchild Street Market. The journey to Bath took between three to four hours depending upon any delays such as landslide at Consets Bay!
A great place to stay is Sea-U apartments, where the view from the deck can only be discribed as heaven!

Martins Bay is renound for its lobster catches and is a great stop along the east coast for lunch.
