BARBADOS - Ezine - FirstCaribbean International Bank

Compliments of the Barbados Advocate

By Petal Barclay-Smith
Managing Director and Country Head of Barbados FirstCaribbean Bank, Oliver Jordan, at the launch of 2005 Regional Unsung Heroes programme at Savannah Hotel yesterday.FirstCaribbean International Bank will honour ordinary citizens who are selflessly and silently at work, building communities across the Caribbean.

The bank launched the Barbados leg of the 2005 Unsung Heroes programme at the Savannah Hotel yesterday, which would be rolled out across the 16 territories in which it operates.

Managing Director and Country Head of Barbados, Oliver Jordan, said that FirstCaribbean recognised that it must do its part in nurturing Caribbean societies.

"We in the FirstCaribbean family are keenly aware that to nurture our societies, we must recognise and encourage the good people around us to continue with their good works and we are committed to honouring our own" Jordan said.

He noted that this year's programme would again seek out and acknowledge those persons in our communities who go about their community work without consideration for reward or acclaim.

In addition, Jordan said that the civilising activities of these citizens make the communities and countries a better place and without them, the society would be immeasurably poorer.

Noting that the unsung heroes give us pride in the present, hope for the future and are living examples of the best we c an be, Jordan said that the programme would promote Caribbean pride through the example and work of the unsung heroes across the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, Jordan said that the unsung heroes should be persons who are unknown to the wider public, but c hampions in their own communities.

The nomination of the heroes will be screened by a country committee made up of well respected community leaders, and a total of 24 finalists will be selected from across the 16 countries.

The loc al selection committee comprises Marina Dumas-Toppin, certified professional secretary with more than 20 years experience in that field; Ian Walcott, full-time project management consultant with the National Cultural Foundation; and Christopher May nard, consultant, ENT Surgeon with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The FirstCaribbean International Bank committee members are Paul Ashby, Michelle Daniel and Hester St. Rose.

While nominations will close July 30, 2005, the local finalists w ill be announced in October, with the regional Unsung Hero being announced in November.

The top regional, as well as two runners- up, will be rewarded and the bank will make a contribution to his/her cause.
