	Date July 25, 2006 by Hallam Hope JAMES JOHNSON is in Toronto for his second major golf tournament in a month, part of a road map taking him to the World Cup in December 2006 in Barbados.

Johnson, who missed the cut in the recent seventh Players Amateur Tournament in Bluffton, South Carolina, United States, will be competing again among some of the best amateur golfers in the United States.

	Compliments of the Nation News SPORTS TOURISM in Barbados has scored another first on the international sporting calendar as the island prepares to stage the World Cup of Golf 2006. The announcement that the prestigious golfing event would be coming to the island came on Friday at a gala breakfast launch at the Sandy Lane Country Club. The Club will also host the event in December 2006, in which the world's top 18 golfers will be invited to compete for a purse worth at least US$4 million, organisers said Friday.
"We chose Barbados because it is a great golfing destination and it has many of the attributes we are looking for," said Jack Warfield, vice-president of the World Golf Championship. (PS) < Read more > Sandy Lane predicts busy 2006

WINTER FORWARD BOOKINGS are strong for the Sandy Lane Hotel, and the island's leading luxury property is predicting another good year in 2006.

New chief executive Mike Pownall said the hotel was expected to be busy for ten months of the year, with traditionally slow periods in June and September.

For January, Pownall said the hotel was already 82 per cent booked while February was 89 per cent booked and March, 75 per cent.

Pownall spoke to the media on Tuesday after recent meetings in London with tour operators and other partners that channel business to the luxury hotel.

According to the new boss, one of the biggest challenges for the property at this time was to devise a strategy to keep the hotel busy every month of the year. < Read more >

A HOLE-IN-ONE on the Sandy Lane Old Nine helped the team of Carlsen Leacock and Shane Chesney to win the first tournament of the Barbados Golf Association's (BGA) 2006 calendar last Sunday. In conditions excellent for golfing, Leacock guided Chesney as the pair snatched victory by 0.2 points from Dawn Bispham and Kenrick "Monty" Haynes. Leacock and Chesney compiled 67.2 points, compared with 67.4 by Bispham and Haynes.

The two-ball New Year's Hamper attracted a full field, with dinner served at the prize-giving ceremony. Drinks flowed at the expense of Leacock after his tee shot with a four iron on the par three, No.4 hole, found its mark. Leacock, a regular Hoerman Cup representative, hit the tee shot three yards to the left of the hole, saw it bounce once and disappear. The apparently missing ball was discovered resting in the cup. "It was very competitive. We played as a team," Chesney said. Darren Boardley, a former Hoerman Cup player, and Michael "Sousie" Haynes were third with 68 points.

Former Barbados cricketer Ricky Skeete and Stephen "Bull" Wickham were fourth with 68.8 points. Fifth place went to Credan Walcott and Randolph Henry with 68.8 points. A total of 17 prizes were handed out. BGA president Birchmore Griffith thanked the players for supporting the tournament and said another was planned for this month.

He invited the golfers to visit the association's website, www.barbados-golfassociation.com, for information on BGA activities. Griffith thanked sponsors Sandy Lane, Banks, Super Centre, Collins Ltd, Cockspur, Baptist Hospital of Miami and Front House Marketing for their contributions to a successful event.
