SOUNDS OF WONDER and amazement were echoing through
the chambers of Harrison's Cave over the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays.
This was despite rumours of the cave being closed for major renovations.
However, the multitude of taxi operators lining the Welchman Hall,
St Thomas attraction's car park, along with the steady number of locals
and tourists taking the ride down into the cave, proved that things
were alive and well at the underground wonder.
A source at the cave said they were thankful the
taximen were still bringing visitors, since there had been no official
announcement of when the cave would be closed, or for how long. The
source said rumours of the cave being closed had stopped people from
coming, although no closure had actually occurred.
They reported, however, that many locals came out
to tour the cave on Boxing Day and when a DAILY NATION team visited
yesterday, droves of tourists were waiting to take the trip into subterranean
wonderland.
CHINA
STATE CORPORATION will be undertaking the redevelopment work at Harrison's
Cave.
Minister of the Environment, Elizabeth Thompson, announced on Friday
that the 15-month project will cost $34 million. Work is set to begin
on July 15.
After thousands of tours and rave reviews over the last 25 years, the
cave, located in Allen View, St Thomas, was closed to the public on Friday.
The minister said it was not an end but "a transition intended to
give the cave a new lease on life as Barbados' premier natural attraction
and to reinforce this designation.
