Cardie Burnett marked his return to competitive golf by winning the 2003 Harris Paints Classic at the Barbados Golf Club course after a titanic battle with Hoerman Cup debutant Darren Boardley recently.

Playing off a six handicap, the former caddie edged out Boardley on the countback after both golfers ended with 39 points. A par on the last hole would have earned Boardley an outright win but he failed to do so.

The field was competitive with 85 entrants, including some of the best names.

The Barbados Golf Association changed the format to give players with lower handicaps a chance, with two flights, those with a nine handicap and under, and 10 and over.

Nick Voss played extremely well.in a tough group with Carlsen Leacock, James Johnson and last year’s winner, Richard Payne. Voss won the 2003 Barbados Junior International tournament last month.

The best junior prize went to Phillip Weekes with 40 points. Weekes is a product of the BGA “Teen Tees” programme started in October last year.

“We are extremely happy that Harris Paints sponsored the tournament for the second consecutive year and we look forward to continue this association,,” BGA President Birchmore Griffith said.

Managing director of Harris Paints Ralph Johnson said he was happy to be associated with the BGA in this tournament and showed a commitment by the improved quality of prizes that were offered this year.

Burnett received a trophy, airfare to St Lucia with accommodation and meals for three days plus spending money and other prizes.
