MARK MALONEY set the Bushy Park Circuit in St Philip, Barbados on fire yesterday, blazing around the track to record the fastest time for today's eagerly anticipated Barbados Auto Racing League's Williams Industries Inc. International meet. He qualified for pole position in his Mazda RX and is expected to be one of the top drivers at the event which gets going at 10 a.m. All eyes will also be on Roger Mayers in the WRC Ford Focus and Stuart Maloney in a Mitsubishi Evolution 6 to see if they can lower the track record. Patrons attending today's event can expect better parking facilities and beefed up security as police and island constables will be deployed at strategic points around the circuit. BARL opens arms for meet

The meet, slated for September 3, is open to members of the Motoring Club Inc. and the Barbados Rally Club.

RECORD-BREAKER A MARKED MAN. Thousands of race fans are expected to converge on the Bushy Park Racing Circuit in St Philip today as the Barbados Auto Racing League stages Round 2 of its 2006 championship series. And even though 54 cars are down to face the starter, attention will be focused on new lap record holder Mark Maloney in the Guinness Power Mazda RX3. During qualifying on Saturday, Maloney set a track record of 43.325 seconds, eclipsing his previous record of 43.564. He now holds the distinction of being the only driver in the history of motor racing in Barbados to break the same record on three or more occasions. THRILL AND TREATS. Well over 8 000 Barbadians and visitors thronged Bushy Park as the Barbados Auto Racing League season got off to a scorching start. Roger ÒThe SheriffÓ Skeete returned to the St Philip circuit after a 11-year break to emerge champion driver. Skeete won all the races in Group 3C and capped it off by blitzing all in the final race of the day, the Handicap. One of the highlights of the day was this amazing run by Adrian Bailey competing in Group 1B. Driving a Peugot 205 GTI, Bailey hit the kerb, blew a tyre and made a stunning two-wheel turn around a S-bend in the top turn Ð without flipping over.
