BARBADOS - National Cultural Foundation Crop Over 2004 - Scotia Bank Junior Calypso king. Junior Songbirds - Sunday 25, July-2004
After an inspiring and keenly-contested competition, the crowns went to the only boy in the 8-12 years category, Co Co, and hot favourite Kya in the 13-18 year group. Second place in the 8-12 category went to Cher and third place to Waynelsa, while in the 13-18 section, Tiffany G placed second and Tanya and Baby Doll tied for third place. Co Co, whose real name is Rico Gaskin, was exceptional singing The Future Is Ours, a tune penned by Brad Linton and Miguel White and arranged by Andre Forde. Only 12 years old, he performed with the confidence of a veteran, commanding the stage with his fine voice and showing the true kaisoman’s flair for the big occasion. On taking the crown he was outwardly calm and composed, though he confessed afterwards that “a million things went through my mind” when the big announcement was made. He had words of encouragement for other young males, and urged them to take up the mantle of kaiso, saying: “Come out and don’t be shy and do your best.” Natasha Kya Williams, a member of the new all-female Calypso Dome tent, led the charge for her tent which copped first and second places and tied for third yesterday. Confident and vibrant as usual, she had the Stadium crowd captivated with her tune Condomise, which she co-wrote along with Anthony Gabby Carter and which was arranged by Keith Ellis. “I’m very thankful – overjoyed!” exclaimed a tearfully happy Kya. She was delighted to bring home the first crown for her new tent, declaring: “This one is for the ladies!” Compliments of the Nation News |
