sailing BARBADOS - sailing - The Ocean Racing Challenge Barbados 2006 Date June 04, 2006 Compliments of the Nation News THE OCEAN RACING CHALLENGE BARBADOS has added a special touch to the Mount Gay/Boatyard 2006 Regatta as it celebrates its 21st year. The Ocean Racing Challenge comprises two 80-foot maxi yachts specially designed for racing, giving a new experience on the water such that it's an adrenaline rush redefined - it offers exhilaration and excitement on the ocean for the first timer or experienced sailor! Athina and Martella, two 80-foot ocean racing yachts, have successfully competed in the Whitbred 'Round The World Race, now known as the Volvo Ocean Race. The Volvo Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world. Held every four years, the race takes the competing yachts through some of the worst sailing conditions in existence. Though the route is changed to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs England in September. The general route leads down into the southern ocean, around the tip of Africa, and then around the southern ocean - where waves sometimes top 100 feet and winds can reach 60 knots. Competitors eventually go around Cape Horn and turn back into the Atlantic on the retun lap to England. The route generally covers in excess of 28 000 miles over the ocean - not for the faint of heart. The Ocean Racing Challenge crew will be watched under the professional captaincy of Clint Brooks and his teams during this exciting week end of the Mount Gay/Boatyard Regatta. The crew will engage in such positions as helmsmen, tactician, grinder, and hoist sails from the Carlisle Bay this weekend. The Mount Gay/Boatyard Regatta features various classes - racing, cruising A, cruising B, and charter, while the maxi yachts will be in a special exhibition class. The boats will sail various courses, however, with two racing yachts this means that there will be one winner and one loser. But, whatever the outcome, after the daily prize-giving ceremonies, the parties at The Boatyard will be hot, with a live band playing on Sunday night. The Ocean Racing Challenge will soon be offering all the opportunity to come aboard and experience this exotic sailing experience. (PR) |
