Polo action at grounds in Holders Hill and Waterhall in St James, as well as Lion Castle and Clifton Hill, St Thomas, has been generating tremendous interest.

Teams from America, Canada and Britain have so far competed against Barbados squads and local players have more than held their own.

In other action at the Waterhall Polo Ground, Chester defeated Virgin Atlantic 6 1/2-6 in a nail-biting match-up.

THE LARGEST CROWD ever to witness a polo game in Barbados turned up at the Lion Castle polo grounds, St Thomas, for the final match of the 2007 Diamonds International/Breitling-sponsored International Polo Tournament on Sunday March 4th 2007.

President of the Barbados Polo Association, Keith Melville, told NATIONSPORT that he was very heartened by the mammoth crowd.

"I have never seen a larger crowd at any polo game in the history of polo in Barbados.

"Polo is definitely on the rise and this is evident from the increasing numbers so far for the year. This augurs well for the future of the sport in Barbados," he said.

On the field, the tournament climaxed with a thrilling 7-5 win for Barbados against the visiting Cheshire polo team of Britain.

Barbados entered the final game with the visitors leading the four-match series 2-1 and desperately in need of a win to level the series. Their recent record of not losing a series to Cheshire in four years was at stake. < Read more >

February 2007 Compliments of the Nation News by EZRA STUART

Danny Atwell raising his hand in delight after scoring Barbados' first goal in the sudden death round. (Pictures by Clifton Henry.) IT WAS POLO from the penalty spot with a gripping shoot-out between Barbados and Argentina at the picturesque Clifton Polo Club in St Thomas
on Sunday evening.

Barbados, inspired by a brilliant sudden death penalty conversion by Jamie Dixon prevailed 4-3 over the visiting Argentina team to capture
the Little Switzerland Trophy.

The shoot-out, contested over three rounds with all four members of each team allocated three penalty shots from 60 yards, kicked off the 2007 international season.

With a strong breeze on a windy afternoon, some players went for power and others looked for precise placement.

The decision to have the shoot-out proved to be a satisfying substitute after the international match had to be cancelled because morning showers made the outfield too soft.

From the opening shot, which was missed by Argentine Ricardo Estrada, to the last penalty, which Dixon clinically converted, the polo aficionados, headed by Sir Charles Williams, were treated to a keen battle with some near misses. < Read more>
