Young strikers on target
Wednesday 14, April-2004
Then it was the turn of the strongly-built 17-year-old Quincy Atherley with a brilliant double strike as Tropical Laundry Gall Hill hammered Doorly’s Beverley Hills 5-2 in the night’s feature match.
In between, Pinelands Creative Workshop Pinelands got the better of Weymouth Wales 3-2 in a top-of-the-table Division 1 clash to maintain their unbeaten record.
Despite two easy misses by Anderson Mayers, Pinelands rushed to a 3-0 lead through a 22nd minute opening goal by Lionel Paul and a double strike from Travis Coppin (25th and 29th).
Leon White pulled a goal back for Wales on the stroke of half-time and substitute Walton Burrowes exploded with a bomb, two minutes into the second half with his first touch.
But Pinelands, with Neil Shepherd pulling the strings in midfield and Randy Brathwaite holding the fort at the back, held on for a well-deserved victory.
Earlier, Dames and Ellerton fielded depleted teams with each team having one substitute on the bench.
Pilgrim, starting upfront with Dames’ captain John Parris, Kirk Cox, Albert Mapp and Christopher Holmes missing, squeezed a shot past Horace Stoute in the 25th minute.
He added his second goal in the 34th minute when he put away a cross from Ryan Lucas. Alvin Holder scored Ellerton’s goal in the 60th minute from the penalty spot, beating Dames’ stand-in goal-keeper Jerry Alexander after Curtis Odle was fouled by Rommell Brathwaite.
Dames should have won by a wider margin but Stoute saved a Llewellyn Riley penalty kick.
In the final game, Atherley opened Gall Hill’s account in the seventh minute but Dwayne Stanford quickly equalised for Beverley Hills in the 10th minute, polishing off a free-kick by Ryan Wickham.
Gall Hill then went on a three-goal spree in the space of eight minutes as Rohan Johnson (29th), Andrew Tudor (35th) and Atherley (37th) made it 4-1 at half-time, forcing Beverley Hills to substitute its goal-keeper.
Richardson Rouse pulled back a goal for Beverley Hills in the 47th minute but play-maker Wickham just could not find his shooting range and their third consecutive loss was sealed by teenager Mario Farrell’s injury time goal for Gall Hill.
