Barbados' beautiful climate and ever present north easterly trade winds make sailing a pleasure. Centuries ago these same trade winds brought the courageous Carib and Arawak Indians in their long canoes It brought Captain John Powell sailing into Holetown in 1625. Each of these inhabitants to our island have contributed to the Barbadian sailing culture

The Barbados Yachting Association works hard to promote sailing and their vision in developing the sport within the community has produced an enthusiastic sailing club with some great young sailors.

Barbados’ young sailors continue to impress at international competitions bringing much glory to their country.

The youngsters started their international campaign early this year at the Schoelcher competition in Martinique where ten-year olds, Amy Cox and Sarah Douglas, brought home first and second place trophies for Barbados.

Following that fine display, Barbados’ Optimist Dinghy sailing team continued to put Barbados on the map at a number of international and regional events.

THREE local sailors, with thoughts of representing Barbados at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, will be pursuing very intensive training programmes in their bid to meet the qualifying requirements for the Games. The three Bajan sailors are Russell Streeter, Christopher Kent and Greg Douglas, who will all be competing at various regional and international competitions in their efforts to qualify for the coming Olympics.
Plans outlining the campaigns of the three sailors to qualify for the upcoming Olympics were recently disclosed at a Press conference at the Barbados Cruising Club.

The competitive local season is usually in the first six months of the year, although there are specific events that occur at other times. Local sailors visit the Caribbean circuit and by the time they all meet for the memorable Mount Gay/Boatyard Regatta in May they have sussed out the opposition and are ready for a great sailing event. Although the competition is fierce and inter - island rivalry strong most visitors and sailors leave with happy memories of an enjoyable social event laced with much celebration or commiseration.

Local yachtsmen will face one of their greatest challenges in the 19th annual Mount Gay Rum Regatta which gets under way in Carlisle Bay on May 29th, with the first race slated for 10 a.m. Presented in association with the Boatyard, the eagerly awaited regatta will be contested in four classes, including, for the first time, a Multi-Hull Class.
The three-day event will consist of two races each day, with prizes presented at the end of each day’s sailing, while the major awards function comes off on Sunday afternoon at the Boatyard. Read more

MANY intriguing battles can be expected this weekend when the island’s top sailors go in search of the titles up for grabs in the 21st Annual Harris Paints Regatta.

The eagerly awaited two-day regatta gets on the way in Carlisle Bay tomorrow, when two races will be contested, while one race is slated for the final day on Sunday.

Plans for the sailing spectacular were announced by Peter Burke of the Barbados Sailing Association at the Bay Street Yacht Club yesterday, when the prizes were also handed over to the organisers of the regatta.

Burke said that the regatta will be contested ion three classes – Racing Class, Cruising Class and Lasers, the latter class included for the first time. Read more

SKIPPER Ralph Johnson, ably assisted by his crew aboard “Bruggadung II”, out-sailed an impressive fleet to carry off overall Racing Class honours in the last weekend’s Harris Paints Regatta.

“Bruggadung II”, with veteran tactician Andrew Burke back on board, further stamped its authority in local circuit, sailing unbeaten in the two-day event which was very keenly contested.

Other outstanding boats in the regatta was “No Compromise”, which was also unbeaten over the two days, to continue on its unbeaten run from the recent Mount Gay Rum/Boatyard. Read more
