BARBADOS - Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament 2005

Compliments of the Barbados Advocate

Combermere repeated as champions of the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament yesterday when they recorded a comfortable 40 run victory over losing finalists St. Stanislaus of Guyana at the 3Ws Oval.

Winning the toss and batting first, the defending champions amassed 192/9 from their allotted 40 overs; led by-in-large from an innings of 76 runs from Carlos Brathwaite who batted at the vital number three position.

It was a bitter taste for the St. Stanislaus team, after having dropped Brathwaite before even getting off the mark; and in the words of team coach Seivewright Benjamin it just goes to show what can happen when you dont take catches at the right time.

Going into yesterdays final, Combermere with their record of 7 wins, 1 loss and 1 no-decision; were undoubtedly the favourites as compared to St. Stanislaus record of 6-2-1.

We knew that it would be a challenge but we were ready for it, contended Benjamin. All things being equal, it wasnt as hard a match as was expected, but things just did not go our way.

But for a team to win by 40 runs at any level does imply some degree of dominance.

For Combermere skipper Gary Belle, it was all about team spirit.

We emphasised team spirit, contended Belle. We didnt want one hero, we wanted 11 heroes in every match and we have dedicated this victory to our Combermere family and especially Mrs. (Mara) Thompson because these are her last few days as head of the P.E department.

It feels very good to have repeated, I was always confident that we would do it because weve been putting in the hard work and its good to see the dividends.

Belle did concede that his recent stint at the Division One level played a crucial part in making him a better leader.

The experience in First Division has given me the chance to play against tougher opposition and it has also allowed me the chance to show what I have learnt to my team-mates.

Commenting of Brathwaites Man-of-the-Match performance, Belle simply said his innings was very much needed and Im very glad he came off today. He is a very talented player and if he works hard can go very far as an all-rounder.

While Brathwaite pulled out all stops, for St. Stanislaus, none of their key batsmen really got going. Lead run-scorer for the tournament Rajiv Ivan only managed 28 runs while Marvin Belle could not repeat his match winning performance from the semi-final against Dominica Schools.

And after Combermeres Christopher Jordan had ripped through the St. Stanislaus top-order claiming three wickets for 17 runs, the Guyanese youngsters were always going to be up against it.

Right arm medium fast, Tebogah Christian was the most successful bowler for St. Stanislaus picking up three wickets for 42 runs from his eight overs.
