Caribbean sports holidays are gaining in popularity and St. Lucia, as one of the main islands scheduled to host the cricket World Cup in 2007, is enjoying the attention.

Golf also draws many visitors, as does tennis, with many of the larger hotels offering facilities for both.

In preperation for the World Cup in 2007 the Beausejour Cricket Ground is being expanded from a seating capacity of fifteen thousand in order to accommodate the thousands of fans that are expected to follow this event from island to island.
Cricket afficionados have given the thumbs up to St Lucia's state of the art Beausejour Stadium. Situated of the outskirts of the tourist resort area, Rondey Bay on the north east coast, the ground is set in the rolling hills of Beausejour.

The World Cup in 2007 will represent the single biggest sporting event that the Caribbean has ever hosted. With its 8,000 hotel rooms, cruise ship birthing facilities, international airport and stadium, St Lucia has positioned itself well to feature prominantly in the World Cup 2007.

CASTRIES, St Lucia - St Lucia will add about 1 100 new hotel rooms to handle an expected increase in visitors for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, the government said yesterday.

Tourism officials expect up to 15 000 visitors for the tournament, which is being held in the Caribbean for the first time.

Construction was to begin shortly on a series of projects including small hotels, condominiums and villas, the government said in a release.< Read more >

There are several small golf courses in St. Lucia and one of the most impressive is the 18 hole St Lucia Golf & Country Club. Set in the scenic, rolling hills of Cap Estates the course offers panoramic views of both the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The ly-designed 6829 Yard Par 71 course is the only 18 hole course on the island. A second 18 hole golf course is in the planning stages. Designed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. The course will be situated at Point Hardy located on the northern tip of the island. This second course will ensure St. Lucia's position as a major golfing destination and attractive real estate to compliment the golf and offer luxury accommodation to golfers, is also being planned.

The highpoint of the year for tennis fans in St. Lucia comes in November and December. In the final week of November Legends Tennis Week held at the St. Lucia Racquet Club, brings together tennis aficionados and masters of the game, like Illie Nastasie or Roy Emerson. There are tennis clinics and exhibition matches.

In december the St. Lucia Open also held at the St. Lucia Racquet Club. This is a tennis and squash open competition that brings together the best regional and international amateur or club players. It is followed by a tournament restricted to professionals who compete for prize purse.
