Alan Burke took top honours in the Open, Masters and Longboard Divisions at the Barbados Surfing Association's first contest in the Surfer Of The Year Series held last weekend at South Point. The divisions contested were the Open, Junior Under-18 Boys, Under-12 Boys and Girls, Ladies, Masters (35 years and over) Bodyboard and Longboard. Conditions were good with waves in the 3-to-5-foot range, allowing Burke to showcase his skill and experience in the Open Division as he executed radical, controlled manoeuvres to win from Brian Gooding who was second, Stefan Corbin, one of Barbados' top junior surfers, was third and Nickie Mashall was fourth. In the Masters' event, Nicholas Donawa was second to Alan Burke while Wayne Roett was third. In the Longboard Division, Burke had to fight off a strong challenge from Stewart Stoute who placed second, while Geoffrey Kieffer was third and Barry Gale fourth. Promising young junior, Bruce Mackie took first place in the Under-18 Junior Boys Division while Niall Thomas was second, Mathew Kieffer third and Lewis St John fourth. Kieffer is tops The Ladies' Division was won by Shannon Kieffer, while Ametza Nicholls was second, Marielle Wilkie third and the youngest female competitor of the event, 10-year-old Chelsea Tuach was fourth. In the Under-12 Girls' Division, Chelsea Roett placed first, Kelsey Duncan second, Chelsea Tuach third and Jade Niccolls fourth. The Boys' Under-12 Division was won by Daniel Edghill, while two eight-year-olds, Gavin Fernandes and Joshua Burke, placed second and third respectively. Mark Kinch was fourth. The Bodyboard Division was won by Alan Bryan with Brett Short second, Joshua Bynoe third and Jason Kistoo fourth. |
