The American-bred, Grant Lourenco-trained horse won nine of his ten races last year, from distances of six furlongs to ten furlongs, and has established records at every distance. Trinidad has won today’s Gold Cup only three times. Bold Lewis landed the inaugural race in 1982, Frisky Wharf followed in 1985, and Call To Account registered a runaway victory in 1988. And despite sending over representatives to compete in all but a few of the Gold Cup races since Call To Account’s win, the owners and trainers from the Land of the Humming Bird have come up empty-handed on each occasion. Compliments of the Nation
