U-15s suffer first defeat

LY-CROWNED 2004 West Indies Under-15 Cricket Champions Barbados suffered their first defeat when they were beaten by the Leeward Islandsin their final match of thetournament yesterday.

Playing without captain Simon Steel, out with a fractured finger, Barbados, chasing a modest 157 runs for victory in 50 overs, were bundled out for 102 injust 26 overs.

Middle-order batsman Amal Nurse topscored with an aggressive 30, while openers Rashidi Boucher (17) and Richard Greaves (12), along with stand-in skipper Christopher Jordan (11) were the only other batsmen to reachdouble digits.

Earlier, the Leewards, winning the toss and batting on a firm pitch, reached 156 for eight in their allotted 50 overs.

Trevier Smithen topscored with 43 to gain the Man-Of-The-Match award, while Jordan, Carleon Brome andStefan Gooding took two wickets each.

The presentation ceremony took place yesterday at 7 p.m. and the young Barbados cricketers, coach George Linton and managerDenis Osbourne are due home at 10:35 a.m. tomorrow morning.
