As an artist William Cummins has always worked from the inside out, developing images on paper drawn from subconscious and unconscious impressions and gestures. These images have tended to reveal attachments and affinities reflecting his origins on the island of Barbados, his evolving identity as a person whose inner life has as much credence and rich material as his outer, public life, if not more. Issues that arise in the process of “drawing” and mark-making are shaped by a critical effort and a conscious appraisal of appearing shapes, textures and colours. These issues, though subconsciously derived, are indicative of a concern for locating the self in a rapidly evolving society marked by a close link, a crucial dependency on the “permanence”, mystery and beauty of island nature.

His work has come to employ unique marks and gestures of a personal visual language and to evoke a life of unique myths, dreams and fragments as they relate to the psychological and physical landscape of my origins.

In the past year his work has been almost entirely in the digital medium. He has investigated issues of texture and colour, the hidden and unread qualities of the mundane physical environment as extracted from multi-layered photographic files. He develops these files into , abstract or semi-abstract images which bear little resemblance to the original but which can be said to have a hidden life, an interior life of energy and history which is evoked through manipulation on the computer.
